In the TV series The Good Place, they come to the revelation that life is so complicated, it’s impossible to be good. You can’t do the right thing, because each choice is inadvertently riddled with unexpected consequences.
That is one of the basic underlying points of the Christian worldview is that no one can measure up. No one is able to live a good life. The Bible puts it this way:
‘For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.’
Romans 3:23 (NLT)
We cannot live up to God’s standard. God is perfect, and no one is. We cannot meet perfection.
That’s the bad news.
But the good news is that God gives us what is needed to live a good life. He gives us Himself.
First, He gave His Son, Jesus, to forgive us.
Then, He makes it possible through His Spirit to live a godly life.
‘By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for giving a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share in his divine nature and escape the world’s temptation caused by human desires.’
2 Peter 1:3-4
God gives us an eternal life: one that is good and one where He helps us to live a good life. It’s only through His divine power that we can escape everything that is bad and life to what is good. This good life is a gift. So will you accept it?
